Meet bonnie meekums
Crossing boundaries, from therapist to writer.
I live in Greater Manchester, UK, where I share a house with my husband, until recently various offspring that I am never entirely confident have finally left, and from time to time grandchildren, whose size is inconsistent with their conviction that they rule the roost.
To relax, I grow vegetables that misbehave even more than the grandchildren, walk in the hills, read, practice yoga, and dance. I also travel alarming distances every now and then, to visit people I love who have inconveniently chosen to live as far away from me as possible.
I am sole authro of two professional books, numerous academic papers and book chapters, and two novels. My joint memoir with my sister Jackie Hales, Remnants of War, was published in April 2021, also to 5* reviews.
My creative words have also been published or are in publication with several literary journals including Ellipsis Zine, Ad Hoc Press, Reflex Press, Fly on the Wall Press, Bandit Fiction, Briefly Zine, and Dear Damsels. In addition, I use creative writing from time to time as part of my academic writing.
I have begun teaching writing, and facilitating Words for Wellbeing workshops. I am a member of Lapidus, the Society of Authors, and a Fellow of the Association for Dance Movement Therapy, UK.

my inspirationWhy crossing boundaries?
I crossed classes, when I went to university as an 18-year-old. As a working-class girl in 1950s London, my dad made up bedtime stories for my sister and me, described in my creative non-fiction The Story Hunter (Dear Damsels, 2019)
I crossed genres. Having been an academic for many years, producing professional and academic publications, my creative writing really took off around 2019. I crossed geographical boundaries. I migrated in 1980 from South to North England. I have family living overseas, and am a regular visitor to Aotearoa / New Zealand. |
